Household size plus how you shop gives you the capacity in cubic feet — then we check your kitchen opening against real dimensions for every fridge type to tell you which ones actually fit.
Two separate questions get answered here, and the second one is where people get burned.
1. How much capacity do you need? The commonly published rule is 4–6 cubic feet per person. We use 5 cu ft per person at the low end and 6.25 at the high end, then scale for how you shop — eating out a lot pulls it down 15%, batch cooking pushes it up 10%, bulk shopping up 25%. That puts a household of four at 20–25 cu ft, which lines up with GE Appliances' own guidance that “a typical family of four is likely to be fine with a refrigerator that measures 25 cubic feet or more.” We floor small households at 14–18 cu ft, because that is the practical smallest full-size fridge, and cap the top at 32 cu ft, because the largest full-size model in the ENERGY STAR dataset is 31.7 cu ft — past that you want a second fridge or a stand-alone freezer, not a bigger single unit.
2. Will it actually fit? This is the real data. We pulled the US EPA/DOE ENERGY STAR Certified Residential Refrigerators dataset and filtered it to full-size, non-built-in models — 2,244 certified refrigerators — then computed the 10th percentile, median and 90th percentile width, height and capacity for each type. So when this tool says a French-door is 32.8–36.0 in wide, that is the actual spread of the models on the market, not a guess.
Against your opening we then apply clearance, and there are two different numbers. To physically slide the cabinet in, spec sheets typically want the fridge width plus about a quarter inch each side — which is why a 35.75 in French-door is sold against a 36 in opening. For ventilation, manufacturers commonly want roughly half an inch at the sides, an inch on top and about two inches behind so the condenser can shed heat. A type is marked Fits if your opening clears the median model of that type with ventilation clearance, Tight if it only clears the narrowest or shortest model in the dataset with bare installation clearance, and No if it does not clear even that.
Which type we recommend. Among the types that fit, we pick the one whose typical capacity lands inside your target range, breaking ties on how close it is, how much room is left over, and how many certified models of that type actually exist (there are 626 French-door models on the market and 82 side-by-side, so a tie goes to the type you can actually shop). Standard-depth models are the default: counter-depth is a flush-with-the-counter styling choice that costs you capacity, and since we cannot know whether you want that look, it carries a deliberate handicap and only wins when nothing standard-depth fits. Every type is listed in the table regardless, so you can override us.
Width and height are hard constraints; depth is not. Most fridge alcoves are open at the front, so a standard-depth fridge simply stands a few inches proud of the counter line — that is normal, not a failure. We therefore report how far it will protrude rather than failing the model, and we steer you to counter-depth when your opening is shallow or there is a cabinet in the way.
The honest limits. ENERGY STAR does not publish depth, so the depth ranges here are general industry guidance — standard-depth cabinets run roughly 29–33 in and 33–36 in with doors and handles; counter-depth runs about 24–27 in and 28–31 in with doors. Confirm depth on the model's own spec sheet. ENERGY STAR also has no “French door” category: those models are certified as bottom-freezers, so we split bottom-freezers at 32 in wide, which cleanly separates the French-door layouts from the single-door ones. That split is our judgement, and we flag it rather than hide it.

About 20–25 cubic feet for an average household of four, using the standard 5–6.25 cu ft per person. GE Appliances' own buying guide puts it the same way: a typical family of four is likely to be fine at 25 cu ft or more. If you batch-cook or shop in bulk, aim at the top of that range or above it; if you eat out most nights you can comfortably drop to the high teens. In practice a family of four almost always ends up in a French-door, because that is the layout that fits 20–25 cu ft into a standard 36 in opening.

Adjust for habits rather than headcount alone: bulk shopping needs the most space because the awkward packaging wastes shelf volume, and a household that eats out most nights genuinely needs less. Measure three things and compare them to the model's spec sheet — not to the marketing dimension. Width of the opening at its narrowest point, height including any hinge cap on top of the fridge, and depth with the doors closed. Then add clearance: roughly half an inch at the sides, an inch on top and about two inches behind for ventilation (your model’s installation instructions override this). Finally, measure every doorway and turn between the front door and the kitchen. Plenty of fridges fit the alcove and cannot get into the house.

Boxing a fridge in tight makes the compressor run longer and shortens its life. Separately, the doors need room to open past 90 degrees or you will not be able to pull the crisper drawers out, which is why a fridge next to a perpendicular wall needs extra space on the hinge side.
Counter-depth models are built shallower so the doors sit nearly flush with your countertops instead of jutting out several inches. You pay for the look in capacity: in the ENERGY STAR data, counter-depth French-door models have a median of 22.5 cu ft versus 24.7 for standard-depth French-door at the same 35.8 in width. Counter-depth cabinets run roughly 24–27 in deep versus 29–33 for standard, before doors and handles.
From 2,244 ENERGY STAR-certified full-size models: top-freezer 23.6–32.7 in wide and 59.7–68.0 in tall (median 18.0 cu ft); bottom-freezer with a single fridge door 23.4–31.1 in wide and 66.0–73.2 in tall (median 17.5 cu ft); French-door 32.8–36.0 in wide and 68.9–70.5 in tall (median 24.7 cu ft); side-by-side 32.9–36.0 in wide and 68.8–70.5 in tall (median 23.4 cu ft). Those are 10th-to-90th percentile spreads, so a 36 in wide by 70 in tall opening covers most of the market.
They occupy almost the same footprint — both cluster at 35.8 in wide and 70 in tall — so it comes down to how you use it. French-door gives you a full-width fresh-food shelf, which is what you want for platters, pizza boxes and sheet pans, and holds a bit more (median 24.7 vs 23.4 cu ft). Side-by-side gives you tall narrow doors that need very little swing room, which is the right answer in a galley kitchen or opposite an island, and puts frozen food at eye level. Side-by-side is also the smaller category now — 82 certified models versus 626 French-door.
