Real washer and dryer dimensions from the ENERGY STAR certified datasets, checked against your opening — side by side, stacked, in a closet or under a counter, with the clearances and vent limits listings leave out.
Most "will it fit" answers online quote one manufacturer's brochure. This one starts from the whole certified market and then adds the two things that actually catch people out: clearance, and the dryer vent.
The dimensions are real dataset values. We pulled three US EPA/DOE ENERGY STAR open datasets from data.energystar.gov — Certified Residential Clothes Washers, Certified Residential Clothes Dryers, and Certified Res-Combo-Washer-Dryer — filtered them to models listed for the United States, and computed the 10th percentile, median and 90th percentile of each published dimension for every machine class. Unlike the refrigerator datasets, these three publish depth as well as width and height, so all three axes below come from the certification data rather than from a rule of thumb.
Machine classes, then arrangements. A "stacked washer dryer" is not one product, it is a pair of machines with a bracket, so its envelope has to be built. We compute the required opening for eleven real arrangements: full-size and compact pairs side by side, the same pairs stacked, a top-load pair, a factory laundry centre, an all-in-one combo, and each washer on its own. Widths add up when machines sit beside each other and take the larger of the two when one sits on the other; stacked heights add the washer, the dryer and a stacking-kit allowance.
The counter-intuitive result worth knowing: a factory laundry centre or "tower" is shorter than a pair you stack yourself. In the certified data the towers run 52.2–75.9 in tall, while a full-size front-load washer at a median 39.0 in with a median 39.0 in dryer bolted on top lands around 79–81 in once you allow for the kit and a couple of inches of air. If your closet is 78 in tall, that difference is the whole decision.
Fits, tight, or no. An arrangement is marked Fits if your opening clears the median machines of that class with clearance, Tight if it only clears the smallest models in the class (10th percentile) with bare installation clearance, and No if it does not clear even those. So "Tight" is not a maybe — it means the arrangement exists at your size, but you have to shop it strictly by spec-sheet dimensions.
Width and height are hard; depth depends on the door. In an open laundry room the machines can stand proud of an alcove, so we report how far they will project rather than failing them. In a closet or under a counter the depth has to actually work, because a door has to close over it — so depth becomes a hard constraint for those two arrangements. A front-load door also swings about 22 in into the room when open, which is the measurement people forget entirely.
The vent is a code question, not a preference. The venting figures here are quoted from the 2021 International Residential Code, Section M1502: the exhaust duct may run a maximum of 35 ft, reduced by 5 ft for every 4 in radius mitered 90-degree elbow and 2 ft 6 in for every mitered 45 (Table M1502.4.6.1); it must be 4 in nominal smooth-interior metal; the flexible transition duct must be a single length listed to UL 2158A, no more than 8 ft, and never concealed in construction; domestic booster fans are prohibited; and the duct must terminate outdoors at least 3 ft from any opening with a backdraft damper and no screen. Listed condensing (ductless) dryers are exempt from needing a duct at all, which is exactly why a heat-pump dryer solves an interior closet.
Where we are giving guidance rather than a citation. The clearance numbers — roughly 1 in at each side, 4 in behind a washer for the fill hoses and standpipe, 6 in behind a vented dryer for a rigid elbow (about 3 in with a flat periscope duct), 2 in behind a ventless dryer, 2 in above a stacked pair, 1 in for the stacking kit, 20 in of headroom for a top-load lid, 22 in of front door swing — are general installation guidance we could not tie to a single citable manufacturer manual. Use them to shop; use the installation instructions in your box to install. Those are the ones a warranty claim goes by.
One more honest limit. Dataset coverage is uneven by field: every washer record publishes a width, but only a minority publish a height or a depth (34 heights and 41 depths behind the 147 full-size front-loaders, for example), while dryer records are near-complete at 402 of 402. The table below shows the model count behind every figure, so you can see how much weight a number carries before you trust it.

A stacked pair is two machines plus a bracket, so you add the heights. In the ENERGY STAR certified data a full-size front-load washer has a median height of 39.0 in and a full-size vented dryer a median of 39.0 in, both a median 27.0 in wide — so a stacked full-size pair needs roughly 28–29 in of width and about 79–81 in of height once you allow for the stacking kit and a couple of inches of air above. A compact 24 in pair stacks to about 67–70 in tall in roughly 25 in of width. A factory laundry centre is a different product: those are certified at 52.2–75.9 in tall as a single unit.
About 57 in of width for a full-size pair: two 27.0 in machines (the median width in the certified data) plus roughly an inch of air at each side and between them. Allow 60 in if you want room to work. A compact 24 in pair needs about 50 in. Height in an open room is usually not the constraint unless there is a shelf or a wall cabinet above — but a top-load washer needs roughly 20 in of clear space over the cabinet for the lid to open fully, and that catches people who install a shelf.
As general installation guidance: about 1 in of air at each side, about 4 in behind the washer for the fill hoses and the drain standpipe, and about 6 in behind a vented dryer for a rigid duct elbow — a flat periscope box duct cuts that to roughly 3 in and is the standard fix for a shallow closet. A ventless dryer needs about 2 in. Allow around 2 in above a stacked pair. These are shopping figures, not a citation: your model's own installation instructions override them and they are the only ones that matter for a warranty claim.
Yes, and it surprises people. A pair you stack yourself lands around 79–81 in tall for full-size machines, because you are adding a 39 in washer, a 39 in dryer, the stacking kit and clearance. A factory laundry centre or tower is one welded unit with nothing bolted on top, and the ENERGY STAR data shows those at 52.2–75.9 in tall. If your closet is 78 in high, a laundry centre fits and a stacked pair may not. The trade-off is repairability — if half a laundry centre fails you are usually replacing the whole unit.
Only the compact 24 in class, reliably. Compact front-load washers are 33.1–33.5 in tall and compact ventless dryers 33.3–33.9 in in the certified data, so both clear a standard 36 in counter. Full-size front-loaders are 38–39 in tall and will not. All-in-one combos will not either — they run 39–46.7 in tall. A top-load washer is out regardless, because the lid opens upward. Check the depth too: a counter usually has a wall or a backsplash behind it, so you cannot let the machine stand proud.
Under the 2021 International Residential Code, Section M1502.4.6.1, the exhaust duct may run a maximum of 35 ft from the connection to the transition duct to the outlet terminal, and that budget is reduced for every fitting: a 4 in radius mitered 90-degree elbow counts as 5 ft and a mitered 45 as 2 ft 6 in, while large-radius smooth elbows count for much less. So two 90s and a 45 spend 12 ft 6 in of your 35 ft before the duct even starts. The duct must be 4 in nominal smooth-interior metal, the flexible transition piece must be a single length listed to UL 2158A and no longer than 8 ft, booster fans are prohibited, and the run must terminate outdoors at least 3 ft from any opening with a backdraft damper and no screen. Your dryer manufacturer's instructions can specify a shorter limit, and if they do, theirs wins.
No — and that is the whole point of one. IRC M1502.2 exempts listed condensing (ductless) dryers from the independent-exhaust requirement, so a ventless or heat-pump dryer can sit in an interior closet with no exterior wall and no duct. It does need somewhere for the condensate to go: either a drain connection or a tank you empty. The trade-offs are a longer cycle and, in the certified data, a smaller drum — the full-size ventless class has a median 7.4 cu ft drum but the compact ventless class runs 4.0–4.5 cu ft against 7.3–8.0 for a standard vented dryer.
Very nearly, in the full-size class. Across 147 certified full-size front-load washers the 10th-to-90th percentile width is 27.0–28.0 in, and the same holds for the 105 top-loaders at 27.0–27.6 in and the 402 full-size vented dryers at 27.0–28.0 in. The market has effectively standardised on 27 in, which is why a 30 in space fits almost anything and a 26 in space fits almost nothing. The real alternative is the compact class at 23.4–23.7 in, which is a genuinely different product with roughly half the washer capacity — a median 2.3 cu ft against 4.5.
