How this tool works
The first thing that decides what you buy is whether your vacuum is bagged or bagless:
- Bagged machines (most Miele and Kenmore canisters, some Hoover uprights) need the right bag — and bags are keyed by a collar shape or “type” (Miele FJM vs GN, Kenmore Type C/Q, Hoover Type Y). The wrong collar simply won't seat. Many bagged vacuums also have a motor/exhaust filter to change occasionally.
- Bagless machines (Shark, Dyson, most Bissell) need filters only — usually a washable foam/felt pre-filter plus a HEPA post-filter, each with its own part number.
We match your model number against each product line's known model prefixes and return the consumables that line uses, with the exact part codes and their common aliases. Where a brand splits a series across two consumables — most notably Miele's FJM (red collar, 3.5 L) vs GN (blue collar, 4.5 L) — we show both and tell you to confirm by the collar color in the bag bay.
Genuine vs. generic: for filters, certified generic sets are widely available and fit the same slot. For bags, generics fit the same collar for less, though genuine bags (especially Miele's self-sealing HyClean) seal best. FAQ
How do I tell if my vacuum is bagged or bagless?
If you empty a clear plastic bin into the trash, it's bagless and you only need filters. If you slide out a paper or fabric bag, it's bagged and you need the right bag type (plus the occasional motor/exhaust filter). This tool tells you which one your model is.
Miele made me pick between FJM and GN bags — which do I need?
Both use the same click-in tab, but the collar size differs: FJM is the red collar for smaller 3.5 L bays (Complete C1, Compact C1/C2), and GN is the blue collar for larger 4.5 L bays (Complete C3, Classic C1). Open your bag door and match the collar color — that's the definitive check.
Are Shark and Dyson filters really washable?
Yes. Shark's foam and felt pre-filters and Dyson's filter units are designed to be rinsed under water, dried fully (about 24 hours), and reused. You only replace them when they no longer come clean or get damaged — Shark's HEPA post-filter is the one you swap roughly yearly.
Can I use generic bags and filters instead of the brand?
For filters, yes — certified generic sets fit the same slots and cost less. For bags, generics fit the same collar too, though genuine bags (especially Miele's self-sealing HyClean) tend to seal and filter a bit better. Just match the exact type/collar or part number.
